Awarding of Degrees

In the awarding of degrees, the following procedure will be followed:

  • The University Provost asks the candidates to stand. Everyone stands together and remains standing until the President and University Provost finish their comments.
  • The Provost will read a brief statement to the President who will respond and confer the degrees.
  • Only the first two rows of associate and baccalaureate degree candidates of the section designated by the University Provost will remain standing and proceed to the platform, led by a student marshal. Everyone else is seated. As each row comes to the aisle, the marshal will ask the next row to stand as a group and move to the aisle and proceed to the platform. Degrees will be awarded by section. After the associate and baccalaureate degree graduates have gone to the platform, the marshals will return to row one of the masters degree students and direct the master degree candidates to the platform. Doctoral degrees will be awarded last.
  • As the candidate approaches the top of the ramp leading to the stage, he/she will give the completed name card from the packet to the academic administrator standing at the podium, who will read the student’s name.
  • Wait at the top of the ramp until your name and honors have been read. Then walk across the stage and receive your diploma folder. Please pause for a moment when you receive your diploma folder from the President to have your picture taken. The Chairman of the Board of Trustees will also congratulate you.
  • Descend by the opposite ramp and be seated as a row in your original place. You should remain standing until the complete row of graduates has returned and then be seated together.
  • May graduates, those who have fulfilled all requirements for graduation and are clear with the University (including finances), should see Academic Records personnel on the Jernigan porch (or designated area in the event of rain) to receive your diploma immediately after the commencement convocation.
  • The Provost will invite your parents and family to stand as your name is called when you receive your diploma. You may wish to alert them.

Parking Tips for Commencement Day

Visitors attending commencement at Trevecca drive more than 3,000 cars onto the campus that day—onto a campus that has 1,200 regular parking spaces. If you plan to be in that group, here are some tips to make your visit to campus more enjoyable.

  1. Come early. The ceremony starts promptly at 9:00 AM. Persons who come early have better parking options.
  2. Handicapped parking areas are filled by 8:30 AM. Anyone who needs handicapped parking must plan to arrive before 8:30 AM.
  3. Interior campus parking areas fill by 8:30 AM. Persons who arrive after that time will be directed to satellite parking areas.
  4. Wear shoes that will be comfortable in case you have to park in a more distant lot. Shuttle service will be available for persons who cannot walk, but others will need to walk the two blocks from the satellite areas to the inner campus.
  5. Three entrances to the campus will be open:
    • Main campus entrance at 333 Murfreesboro Road (Most people enter the campus this way. It has much traffic.)
    • Service entrance, on Murfreesboro Road west of the main campus entrance (between the Boone Business Building and Trevecca Community Church of the Nazarene).
    • Nance Lane at Murfreesboro Road, east of the main campus entrance—Proceed up Nance Lane; personnel will direct you to the satellite parking areas.
