As you explore the music area, please feel free to contact department faculty with specific questions. Our desire is that your transition to college will be smooth as possible and that these simple guidelines will help in that process.

Majors:
Students choosing to major in music should be prepared to sing or play representative works from their repertoire for placement into class or private instruction. Additional placement procedures include proficiency examinations in music theory (written and aural) and functional keyboard skills.

Non-Majors:
If you are a musician interested in being involved in the Department of Music, please go to the Ensemble Auditions Page for information about our Friday Auditions.

If you are interested in Elective Private Lessons, please let the appropriate professor know about your interest during your ensemble audition time.

Please see the Competency Diagnostics, for which the student will be required to complete before the registration process may begin:

Theory Placement
Incoming students desiring to major in music will be required to take Theory Placement diagnostic.
The student will be placed in the appropriate Music Theory course based on the level of competency. 

The following are components of this diagnostic:

1. Scales
2. Key Signatures
3. Time Signatures
4. Harmonic Analysis

Aural Theory Placement
Incoming students desiring to major in music will be required to take an Aural Theory Placement diagnostic.
The student will be placed in the appropriate Aural Theory course based on the level of competency. 
The following are components of this diagnostic:

1. Pitch Matching
2. Interval Identification
3. Chord Identification
4. Sight Singing

Piano Proficiency Test

• Incoming students desiring to major in music will be required to take a piano placement diagnostic.
• The student will be placed in the appropriate Class Piano course.
• Based on the placement, the class piano courses not required will be waived.
