Professional Licensure Information

The Graduate Counseling Program is designed to assist students in becoming prepared to take licensure exams and to become licensed with the state board of Tennessee.

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Tennessee

Three examinations are required for the LPC licensure:

1- National Counselor Exam (NCE) is offered each fall and spring on campus at TNU. This exam was created by The National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), which is under the American Counseling Association (ACA) and consists of 200 multiple choice questions.  We recommend the Encyclopedia of Counseling by Rosenthal as a study resource for the NCE.

2- National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam (NCMHCE)
The simulated cases on the NCMCHE are designed to sample a broad area of competencies, not merely the recall of isolated facts. Therefore, the problems assess clinical problem-solving ability, including identifying, analyzing, diagnosing, and treating clinical issues. The examination consists of ten clinical mental health counseling cases. Each case is divided into approximately five to eight sections classified as either information-gathering or decision-making.

3- Tennessee Jurisprudence Examination For Professional Counselors (TJE)
