NASHVILLE, Tenn. – No. 10 Trevecca
Nazarene University (36-12, 8-2) hosted No. 7 Lyon College (41-11, 7-3)
on Friday for the first game of a crucial TranSouth series, taking game
one 8-4.
Todd Dunlap (6-2) started and went the distance for the Trojans taking
the win while scattering seven hits, allowing four earned runs, walking
four and fanning six. The team traded runs in the first, and Lyon
briefly took the lead with a run in the top of the fourth. Trevecca,
however, answered back in a big way, plating five runs in the bottom
half to capture the lead which they would not relinquish. Trevecca
added single runs in the fifth and seventh, while Lyon’s Andy Bettis
hit his 14th home run of the season – a two run blast – in the top of
the eighth. Lyon loaded the bases in the ninth, but Dunlap got the
defending TranSouth player of the year to ground out to first, ending
the game. Justin Fuqua (7-2) started and took the loss for Lyon and was
relieved in the fourth inning by Bill Pendergist. Pendergist lasted
until the eighth when James Coulter came in to pitch for the Scots.
Kyle Jackson led the way for the Trojans with a 3-for-3 performance
that included a double, a walk, a run, and four RBI. Brad Coon was
2-for-4 with a double, a walk, two runs, and his 44th stolen base of
the year – bringing him to within one of his own single season record
set last year. Bubba Norris was also 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a
run and an RBI.
