Cumberland Wins Region XI, Advances to Super Regional
LEBANON, Tenn. (Baird Park) - #2 seed Cumberland University (52-18)
defeated #6 seed Cumberland College (38-21) 19-4 to advance to the NAIA
Super Regional. The Bulldogs will play the winner of Region XII
(Milligan College or Spalding University) for a chance to defend their
NAIA National title at the NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho. The
Super Regional is a best of three series. Region XII is the host for
this year's Super Regional.
The Bulldogs put a run on the board in the bottom of the first and two
more in the third and never looked back. The Patriots scored a run in
the top of the fourth, but the Bulldogs answered with five in the
bottom of the fourth. Each team scored a run in the fifth. Heading into
the sixth inning the defending champions led 9-2. The Patriots out of
the Mid-South conference scored another run, but the Bulldogs answered
with another three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 12-3 lead.
The Bulldogs added seven more in the bottom of the eighth and held the
Patriots to just one run in the ninth.
Josh Underwood took the mound for Cumberland University and was in
control throughout. Isaiah Ruffner took the loss for the
Patriots after allowing seven runs in his 3.1 innings pitched.
Chuck MacFarlane was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Region XI
tournament and added to his tournament totals with a 2-for-5
performance in the championship game with two runs scored, three RBI,
and a home run. Donnie Brukhalter was 3-for-4 with an RBI, a home run,
a double, and two runs scored. Derek DePew was 3-for-4 with a run
scored and three RBI.
