Patriots Upset #1 Seed Trojans
LEBANON, Tenn. (Baird Park) - #1 seed and NAIA No. 6 Trevecca Nazarene
(45-16) faced #6 seed Cumberland College (36-19) of Kentucky to open
the 2005 NAIA Region XI baseball tournament. Cumberland upset
Trevecca 6-5 with a come from behind effort.
Freshman Barrett Brown (8-3) took the mound for the Trojans of Trevecca
Nazarene, while junior Clemson transfer Adam Walker (7-0) took the
mound for the Patriots of Cumberland College. Brown had a perfect game
through three innings and had a no-hitter and shutout broken up with a
out in the fourth. Brown also tied a career high with 11 strikeouts.
Brown pitched eight innings and gave up five runs, seven hits, walked
one and struck out 11. Walker lasted 7.1 innings and gave up five runs,
13 hits, allowed two walks and had four strikeouts. The win went to
Jake Shaver who pitched the ninth and allowed just one hit and had a
strikeout. Nick Bodnar took the loss after pitching the ninth for
Trevecca and allowed an unearned run on two hits and struck out one.
Trevecca broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the second.
Trevecca's Craig Ballentine reached after being hit by a pitch and
courtesy runner Kris Ruderer advanced to second on a stolen base and to
third on a sacrifice fly by Bubba Norris. Ruderer scored on a Ryan
Hoganson single. Trevecca added three more in the top of the third when
with one out Cody Willoughby singled, and then advanced to second on a
Stipe Miocic single. Shaun Cozart drove in Willoughby with a single and
Miocic advanced to third on a bobble in the out field, then scored on a
wild throw to third. Cozart advanced to third. Cozart scored on a
Ballentine ground out. Trevecca led 4-0 till the fourth.
The Patriots ended Brown's perfect game and shutout in the bottom of
the fourth. Brown walked Dan Guttridge to start the inning and with an
out in the inning gave up the no-hitter with a double to Roman Cox.
Guttridge advanced to third and later scored on a Chris Wood ground
out.
The Trojans added a run in the fifth inning when Willoughby singled,
advanced to second on a Miocic single, advanced to third on a wild
throw, and scored Cozart sacrifice fly. Trevecca led 5-1 after the top
of the fifth.
The Patriots rallied in the bottom of the eighth against Trojan starter
Barrett Brown. Matt Mikolajczyk started with a single and advanced to
second when Guttridge was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced a base
when Drew Fahey reached on a bunt. Cox singled to score Mikolajczyk and
Guttridge. Fahey advanced to second. Wood provided a sacrifice bunt to
advance both runners and Chaz Gentry singled to score Fahey and Cox.
With the four runs, Cumberland tied the game heading to the ninth.
In the top of the ninth Trevecca's Stipe Miocic reached again, but was
left stranded at second. Trevecca sent Nick Bodnar to the mound to
start the ninth. Aaron Ellis led off the bottom half of the inning with
a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Bodnar struck
Mikolajczyk out, but advanced to first on a passed ball and Ellis
advanced to third. Guttridge lined out to left for the second out of
the inning, but Fahey reached on an infield single that scored Ellis
for the winning run.
Trevecca will play the loser of Game 2 between Cumberland University
and Lyon College at Noon on Thursday. Cumberland College will face the
loser of the tournament's Game 3 between Campbellsville University and
Lambuth University at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
