Cumberland, Lone Favorite to Win on Day One

LEBANON, Tenn. (Baird Park) - #2 Cumberland University (49-18) defeated #5 Lyon College (48-17) in the final game of day one of the Region XI Tournament by a final score of 12-4.

The Bulldogs of Cumberland wasted no time scoring four runs in the first inning, one run in the third, and five runs in the fourth inning. Trailing 9-0, Lyon managed a run in the bottom of the fifth and two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 9-3 Cumberland lead. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the top of the ninth inning while Lyon scored once more in the bottom of the inning to give Cumberland the 12-4 victory.

Cumberland's Jared Brown picked up the win giving up one run (earned) on one hit and striking out eight. Luis Magdaleno pitched one inning in relief giving up two runs (one earned) on one hit and striking out two while Adam Tomlinson gave up one run (earned) on one hit and struck out two. Lyon's Hal Skinner picked up the loss pitching 3.2 innings and giving up nine runs (one earned) on six hits and striking out one. Eli Arnett relieved Skinner and gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out two in 5.1 innings of work.

Cumberland's Donnie Burkhalter batted 2-for-4 with three runs, one RBI, a walk, and a solo home run.

Cumberland scored 12 runs on 11 hits and committed three errors while Lyon managed four runs on three hits and committed four errors.
