LEBANON, Tenn. - NAIA No. 6 and top seed Trevecca (46-16) defeated
fifth seeded Lyon College (48-18) Thursday in the NAIA Region XI
Tournament by a final score of 12-3.
The Trojans wasted no time scoring three runs in each of the first two
innings to take an early 6-0 lead. Lyon scored a run in the top of the
third inning only to see Trevecca match the score with a one run bottom
of the third. Lyon answered with two runs in the fourth inning, but the
Trojans added one run in the fourth, three in the sixth, and one in the
eighth to take the 12-3 victory.
Trevecca's Todd Dunlap (10-2) earned the win after pitching seven
innings and giving up three runs (all earned) on five hits and striking
out seven. Norton Hunter relieved Dunlap in the eighth inning and threw
eight innings of no-hit ball striking out two. Lyon's Brandon Qualls
took the loss lasting only an inning and a third giving up six runs
(all earned) on six hits and one strikeout. Bill Pendergist relieved
Qualls and gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits and struck out
two in four and a third innings of work. Justin McGarity finished the
game for Lyon pitching two and a third innings giving up one run
(earned) and one hit and striking out one.
Trojan rightfielder Kyle Jackson got his first home run of the year on
a three-run shot in the bottom of the second inning while designated
hitter Shaun Cozart also went yard for the Trojans. Trevecca third
baseman Stipe Miocic batted 3-for-3 on the day with one run, two RBI,
two walks, a triple, and a stolen base. In Trevecca's six postseason
games this year, Miocic is batting 17-for-25 (.680) with nine runs, 11
RBI, two doubles, a triple, and three home runs.
For Lyon, first baseman Andy Bettis hit 2-for-3 with a run in the losing effort.
Trevecca scored 12 runs on 14 hits and committed one error while Lyon managed three runs on five hits and committed two errors.
The win advances No. 1 Trevecca to play Friday at 3:30 p.m. The loss
eliminates Lyon from the NAIA Region XI Tournament and ends their
season at 48-18.
