NASHVILLE,
Tenn. – Trevecca (1-0) started the season on Friday
with a 68-61 win over Arkansas Baptist (0-1) in the Lee University (Cleveland, Tenn.) Holiday Inn Classic. Trevecca will face Wesley College on Saturday at Noon.
The
Trojans and Buffalos battled early on in the first half. Trevecca led
15-10 when the Buffalo's ran off 11 consecutive points and led 21-15.
Trevecca answered with a 13-0 run to regain the lead 18-21. Another
Arkansas Baptist run of 7-1 provied the halftime score of Trevecca 29
Arkansas Baptist 28.
Trojan newcomer Collins Onyando gathered seven rebounds in the opening half
while freshman Alex Renfroe led the first half scoring with eight points.
Trevecca shot only 2 of 11 from the three point line but took an eight rebound
advantage heading into the second half.
Trevecca held the lead for most of the second half, but Arkansas
Baptist edged ahead 38-36 with 16:15 to go. Trevecca pushed ahead with
a 7-0 run that gave them a 43-40 lead. Trevecca eventually pulled ahead
59-49 with five minutes to play. Arkansas Baptist outscored the Trojans
12-5 to pull to within 64-61 with just 12.1 seconds remaning.
Trevecca's Eric Price scored and was fouled to seal the victory as
Trevecca took the 68-61 victory.
Trojan senior Eric Price tallied a
double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds in the winning effort. Senior point
guard Brandon Howard added 13 points and two steals while freshman Alex Renfroe
finished with 11 points and three assists. Freshman post Collins Onyando tallied
12 rebounds on the day.
As a team, Trevecca shot 45.6% (26
of 57) from the field, 23.5% (4 of 17) from the three point line, and 57.1% (12
of 21 from the free throw line. Arkansas Baptist shot 35.3% (24 of 68) from the
field, 20.8% (5 of 24) from the three point line, and 57.1% (8 of 14) from the
free throw line.
