After back-to-back runs to the NAIA Elite Eight, the Trevecca women’s basketball program faced some major hurdles entering the 2006-07 season. The team lost half of its 14-player roster from 2005-06, including four fifth-year seniors, and returned only three seniors and one starter to the lineup.

The Trojans opened the season on November 4th with a record-setting defeat of Knoxville College and set two team benchmarks in the contest: the most points recorded in a single game (136) and the largest margin of victory (115).

After dropping an exhibition game to the Tennessee State University Tigers 74-71, Trevecca returned to regulation action in the Bevo Francis Classic at the University of Rio Grande in Rio Grande, Ohio. Trevecca opened the classic with a tough battle against the then tenth-ranked University of the Cumberlands, taking a two-point decision from the Patriots 53-51. The win launched Trevecca on a hot streak, during which the team collected eight consecutive victories and three classic titles, and the Trojans entered the break between semesters with a perfect 8-0 record.

During the break the Trojans traveled to Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex to compete in the NAIA Challenge. Trevecca opened the Challenge against the then 10th-ranked Lee University Flames. Lee jumped out early, leading by as many as 16 points in the first half, before Trevecca rallied to close the gap to seven at intermission. Out of the break, Lee stretched their lead back out to 13 points, but the Trojans would not go away. Abby Lawson scored 17 of her 21 points in the second stanza, and with 1.8 seconds remaining, Casey Atteberry tied the game at 66-66. Lee would claim the game with a free throw with just .4 seconds left on the clock, 67-66. The loss snapped the Trojans 12-game regular season winning streak and ended their second consecutive undefeated start to a season of eight games or better. Trevecca bounced back to defeat Brenau University 86-61 in their final game at Disney and took a 9-1 mark into TranSouth conference play.

The Trojans suffered a setback in their first conference game of the season, falling to the Martin Methodist RedHawks in Pulaski, Tenn., on January 4th, 61-60, but they came back to win four straight, including wins over No. 3 Union University 69-63 and eighth-ranked Cumberland 90-77. After Freed-Hardeman beat the Trojans to end the spurt, Jennifer Bognar stepped to the forefront, notching back-to-back games of at least 29 points against Lambuth and Blue Mountain and setting the Trevecca single-game free throw percentage record against Blue Mountain by hitting all 16 foul shots she attempted in the contest.

The second half of the season opened with Trevecca avenging its earlier loss to Martin Methodist with a 66-57 win in Nashville. Following the win, the Trojans embarked on a three-game road swing in the conference, taking two of three on the trip, before returning home and defeating 11th-ranked Cumberland and 14th-ranked Freed-Hardeman in back-to-back games to run their record to 21-4, including an 11-3 mark in the TranSouth.

After Lambuth ended the Trojans’ four-game winning streak, the Trevecca women beat Blue Mountain on Senior Night in Nashville, starting their fifth winning streak of at least four games on the season, during which the Trojans wrapped up their first-ever undefeated home season. The streak also earned the Trojans their second-consecutive trip to the TranSouth tournament title game where, despite a 30-point effort from freshman Abby Lawson, the Trojans fell to the Union Bulldogs 80-66.

Trevecca earned an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament, drawing one of the four #2 seeds and facing NAIA #25 Westmont College in the first round. Westmont came out and built a 27-17 lead against the Trojans, but Trevecca remained poised, using a 10-0 run to tie the game and at the break the contest was <s>all</s> knotted up at 27-27. Trevecca continued its spurt out of the break, using a 13-2 run to take the lead to double-digits where it remained for much of the rest of the game with Trevecca taking the 14-point win 67-53. In the second round, NAIA #11 Carroll College gave the Trevecca women all they could handle, and it took a pair of Mariska Reed free throws with 18.7 seconds left in the game to give the Trojans their third consecutive trip to the Elite Eight with a 57-55 win. The third round saw Trevecca draw NAIA No. 1 and top seed Vanguard University, and the Lions used a 32-point effort from NAIA Player of the Year Jessica Richter to knock the Trojans from the tournament 82-56.

Mariska Reed earned first-team All-TranSouth and Honorable Mention All-American honors for the season, while Kristin Archie, Jennifer Bognar, and Abby Lawson were selected second team All-TranSouth. Lawson was also chosen to the All-Freshman team as well.
