NASHVILLE, Tenn. - NAIA No. 22 Trevecca (9-6, 0-1) Trevecca fell to No. 15 Cumberland University (16-3, 1-0) in OT 61-54.
Trevecca started the game with a 5-0 run, but saw Cumberland answer
with a 16-0 run. The came after Cumberland called a timeout with 17:45
to play in the half. When the run ended the Bulldogs led 16-5 with
11:32 to go in the half. Trevecca would cut the lead to three with
their own 8-0 run, but trailed 29-23 at the break.
Cumberland pulled away to start the second half and led 35-26 with
17:00 minutes remaining. That’s when Trevecca’s Jackie Weaver started
to dominate inside. With Weaver blocking shots and tipping passes the
Trojans turned the table with a 14-2 run and took a 40-37 lead with 12
minutes remaining. The teams would exchange leads until the clock
expired with both teams sitting at 49 points.
In overtime Trevecca took a 54-51 lead with two minutes remaining, but
Cumberland clawed back and scored the final 10 points to claim the road
win 61-54.
Trevecca’s Jackie Weaver nearly posted a triple double with 22 points,
14 rebounds and a school record eight blocked shots. Weaver was 7 of 11
from the field and hit 8 of 11 free throws. Weaver also added four
steals to her totals. Jana Reed also contributed eight points and 10
rebounds and had two blocks and three steals. Mariska Reed scored nine
and grabbed seven rebounds.
For the game Trevecca hit 19 of 64 (29.7%) from the field, 1 of 12
(8.3%) from three point range, and 15 of 25 (60%) from the foul line.
Cumberland hit 22 of 77 (28.6%) from the field, 3 of 20 (15%) from
three point range, and 14 of 20 (70%) from the foul line. Lee Lee
Cannon led the Bulldogs with 16 points, nine rebounds, six steals and
an assist. Ashley Cross had six assists and seven rebounds. Tamika Hall
had 10 rebounds. Trevecca had 23 turnovers and 10 steals. Cumberland
had 24 turnovers and 12 steals
