JACKSON,
Tenn. – The Trevecca women’s basketball team (22-9) advance to the NAIA
Division I Women’s basketball Elite Eight on Friday, claiming a second
round win over the two-time defending National Champions from Southern
Nazarene University (28-7).
Trevecca
came out in the first half playing their best Basketball of the season,
mounting a 12-4 run right out of the gates. SNU battled back, however,
mounting a 12-2 run of their own, taking their only lead of the night
with 7:48 remaining in the first half. SNU eventually ran their lead to
31-25, but Trevecca answered with a 13-0 run to end the half in front
of the Crimson Storm 40-35. Trevecca had another 8-0 run early in the
second half, followed by a 9-0 run, extending the lead to 59-42 with
12:15 left in the game. SNU would not go away, however, piecing
together a 7-0 run to cut the Trojan lead to 10 at 65-55 with 4:38 to
play. SNU continued to chip away, narrowing the gap to six points with
2:36 remaining, but Trevecca put the Storm away with a 13-0 run,
sealing the victory 80-64.
For the
Lady Trojans, who earn their first ever trip to the Elite Eight, Ashlie
Gilland led the way for the second consecutive night. Gilland topped
her 18 point performance in the first round with a Tournament High 32
points. She was 8-of-19 from the floor, including 3-of-8 from behind
the three-point line, and 13-of-16 from the foul line. Gilland also
grabbed eight rebounds and had three assists. Kristin Scoggins and
Mariska Reed were also in double figures with 14 points each. Jackie
Weaver grabbed a team high nine rebounds and had the Trojans only
blocked shot. Trevecca shot 21-of-50 from the field (42.0%), 9-of-19
from long range (47.4%), and 29-of-36 from the charity stripe (80.9%).
