Martin Methodist Upsets Union in First Round

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Game two of the TranSouth Conference Softball Tournament saw third seeded Martin Methodist College (41-10) upset second seeded Union University (38-12-1) by a final score of 5-0.

Martin Methodist jumped ahead early scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. The Lady RedHawks added a run in the top of the fourth and sixth inning to secure the 5-0 victory.

Martin Methodist's Dara May (17-5) threw the complete game shutout giving up only five hits and striking out six in seven innings of work. Union's Mary Kosco (20-8) took the loss giving up four runs (one earned) on six hits and striking out five in five innings. Jackie Cliff relieved Kosco in the sixth inning and gave up one earned run on three hits in two innings of work.

Karen Hargrove batted 3-for-4 for the Lady RedHawks including a double, two runs, and an RBI. Danielle Pope went 2-for-3 for Union in the losing effort.

Martin Methodist scored five runs on nine hits and committed one error while Union did not score on five hits and committed three errors.

No. 3 Martin Methodist advances to play Thursday, May 5th at 11:00 a.m.in the winner's bracket semi-finals against the winner of No. 1 Trevecca and No. 4 Freed-Hardeman. No. 2 Union falls to the loser's bracket and will face No. 5 Cumberland University Thursday, May 5th at 1:30 p.m.
