The 2001-2002 season was another successful season for the Scott Jones and his Trojans. With Senior leadership from Natalie Pifer, Michelle Arend, Dana Berry, and Rachel Johnson the Trojans played tough all season. Newcomers Katie Carter and Lauren Appleby provided much spark for the Trojans from the offensive side of the ball. Returning players Natalie Cameron and Sarah Milli also added depth to the Trojans attack.
The Trojans played one of the toughest schedules in the nation this season as they faced 12 Nationally ranked teams, 1 NCAA Division I team, and 1 NCAA Division II team. Trevecca defeated two ranked opponents, with wins over #9 Palm Beach and # 16 Lee and defeated NCAA Division 1 Tennessee State University on their home court. The Trojans won the McKendree College Tournament and finished second in the prestigious Taylor University Tournament. The Trojans finished the season with a 26-14 record, 3rd in the always-tough TranSouth Conference with a 7-3 record. The Trojans won three games in the conference tournament before finishing third and advanced to their second consecutive Regional XI Tournament and defeated Cumberland of Kentucky before losing to top seed and 10th ranked Georgetown College in the semi-finals.
The awards and honors poured in for the Trojans all season long. Head coach Scott Jones achieved his 100th career win with a victory over Cumberland (TN) on November 6th. The Trojans placed five players on the All-TranSouth Conference team as Michelle Arend, Natalie Cameron, Katie Carter, and Natalie Pifer earned First Team honors, and Freshman Lauren Appleby earned second team honors. The Trojans also excelled off the court as 7 players were named TranSouth Scholar Athletes. Michelle Arend, Molly Schoenberg, Natalie Pifer, Rachel Johnson, Katie Carter, Natasha Donoho, and Sarah Lawrence earned the academic honor. Seniors Natalie Pifer and Michelle Arend earned recognition at the national level, as they were both named Academic All-Americans. Trevecca also garnered attention at the regional level as Natalie Pifer and Katie Carter were named First Team All Region and Michelle Arend and Natalie Cameron were named Second Team All Region. Natalie Pifer and Natalie Cameron also were named to the TranSouth Conference All Tournament Team.
While Trevecca dominated the awards list all season, they also dominated the stat book. Natalie Cameron finished 7th in the conference with 3.28 kills per game, Katie Carter finished 8th with 2.81 kills per game and Lauren Appleby finished 9th with 2.18 kills per game. Cameron finished 3rd in the Conference in attack percentage with 0.328 and Natalie Pifer finished 3rd in assists with 1,594 on the season for an average of 10.77 per game. Defensively, Michelle Arend was 7th in the conference with 459 digs and Katie Carter was 2nd in the conference with 191 blocks. As a team, the Trojans finished 3rd in attack percentage, 3rd in aces, 3rd in team defense, and1st in the conference in blocks.
Trevecca had another great season in 2001 and the outlook for 2002 looks very bright. The loss of four seniors will hurt the Trojans, but a strong returning cast, bolstered by a wealth of talented newcomers, should propel the Trojans to another Regional Tournament berth and possibly the Trojans first ever trip to the NAIA National Tournament.
