Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball coach Scott Jones came to Trevecca nine years ago and has produced the most success of any coach in school history. Entering the 2005-2006 season Scott Jones knew his 10th season at the helm would require him to mix up his style of play to match his talent. “We’re going to have to play a speed game for the first time since I’ve been here. We’ve always been a power team, but with the shorter lineup this year, we’ve had to adjust,” said Jones at the beginning of the season. Jones coached teams went to four consecutive Region championships through the 2003-04 season. Injuries to the starting lineup, including the top two setters has hampered the rebuilding process and a return to the region.
The Trojans started 2-0 by defeating Covenant College and NCAA D-II Oakland City University. The team picked up two wins in the Reinhardt Tournament and had equaled their win total from the year before in just 10 matches. Trevecca opened the TranSouth Conference play with an upset over the eventual champion Martin Methodist. It would be the only loss in conference play for the regular season and tournament champions. The young Trojans picked up another conference win over Cumberland University before taking two more wins in the Taylor Tournament. Those wins gave the Trojans double the wins over last season. Trevecca picked up another win before heading into conference play with a win over LeMoyne-Owen College.
Trevecca would make some noise in the TranSouth tournament before being eliminated in the double elimination tournament. After losing to No. 3 seed Lyon College in the first round the Trojans eliminated the No. 4 seed Union University in five games. Trevecca’s reward was a rematch with Lyon College and the Trojans looked like they might get another upset before losing in four games.
Trevecca ended the season with a 10-20 overall mark and were 2-8 in conference play.
Trevecca placed senior Valerie Hicks and junior Taina Ovchinnikov on the TranSouth Volleyball All-tournament team. Valerie Hicks also made the All-TranSouth first team and junior Taina Ovchinnikov was one of the six conference players named to the second team. Valerie Hicks, Taina Ovchinnikov, Monica Johnsen, Christina Stanley, and Victoria Phillips all earned Academic All-TranSouth Conference team honors. Also, Taina Ovchinnikov was Academic All-American and our team GPA is 3.2 (Our goal is 3.5).
Scott Jones now stands at 183-149 overall in 10 years at the helm. Jones is now just 17 wins shy of the 200 mark in his career. He is by far the winningest coach in the programs history.
