Sacred Harp Convention
As many as 500 singers from around the Southeast US will visit the campus of Trevecca Nazarene University for the 2011 United Sacred Harp Convention.
The convention will take place on Saturday and Sunday, September 10-11; both students and the public are welcome to participate and/or observe.
Sacred Harp singing is a uniquely American tradition that brings communities together to sing four-part hymns and anthems. It is a proudly inclusive and democratic part of shared cultural heritage. The tradition was born from colonial “singing schools” whose purpose was to teach beginners to sing. Today’s methods continue to reflect this goal. Though Sacred Harp is not affiliated with any denomination, it is a deeply spiritual experience.
The singing schedule is as follows:
Saturday, September 10
9:00 AM–12:00 PM
1:00–4:00 PM
Sunday, September 11
9:00 AM–12:00 PM
1:00–2:00 PM
