Licensure Information

The graduate psychology program is designed to assist students in being prepared to take licensure exams and be licensed with the state board of Tennessee.

There are three exams that a required for licensure for Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Tennessee.

1- National Counselor Exam (NCC) Cost $230, offered each  fall and spring on campus at TNU.

This exam was created by The National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), which is under the American Counseling Association (ACA) and consist of 200 multiple choose questioins.  Encyclopedia of Counseling by Rosenthal is what we recommend you use to study for the NCC.  

2- National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam (NCMHCE) Cost $145

The simulated cases on the NCMCHE are designed to sample a broad area of competencies, not merely the recall of isolated facts. Therefore, the problems assess clinical problem-solving ability, including identifying, analyzing, diagnosing, and treating clinical issues. The examination consists of ten clinical mental health counseling cases. Each case is divided into approximately five to eight sections classified as either information gathering or decision-making. The areas covered by the exam include:

3- Tennessee Jurisprudence Examination For Professional Counselors (TJEPC) Cost $40

There is one written exam that is required for licensure for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in the state of Tennessee.

The test is taken through Prometric (PES), contact them at proexam.org, to apply.  Application fee is $220.  When individuals submit their application for Temporary License, they will be sent information about exams.  The Oral Ethical exam is taken after completion of your supervised hours are completed.
