Frequently Asked Questions - Graduate Studies in Religion

May I take Graduate Religion Courses in order to earn Continuing Education Units (CEU's)?
Students may register for CEU credit by filling out an application, registration form for each semester, and paying a CEU fee as well as a $25.00 application fee.  Normally, a student will receive one CEU credit for every 10 hours of seat time in class.

 
What degree must I have completed for admission to the MA in Religion?

In order to be considered for admission a student must have completed a B.A. or B.S. from a regionally accredited educational institution.  Students who have completed an equivalent degree from an accredited Bible College may be considered for admission upon specific appeal from the director of the graduate program in religion.  Most graduates of a Bible college will be admitted with academic restriction.  This restriction may be removed if the student achieves a 3.0 or higher the first semester.

 

What is a complete file?

A complete file is necessary prior to commencing graduate work leading to the M.A. in Religion.  The following constitutes a complete file: a) completed application, b) $25.00 application fee, c) philosophy of ministry statement, d) official transcripts of all prior academic work, e) MAT or GRE scores, and f) two recommendations.

 

When does my file need to be completed?

In order to register for course work leading to the M.A. in Religion a student must have a completed file no less than two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester in which the student intends to begin course work.

 

How will I be informed of admission decisions?

Admission decisions will be communicated through email.  Therefore, it is important to provide a correct email address on the application.  If there is not email the admission decision will be communicated in writing.

 

How many hours are required for the M.A. in Religion?

The Master of Arts in Religion requires 36 hours.  For students who have a weak background in religion more hours may be required.

 

Is there a minimum score on the MAT?

The MAT score should be at least 25 raw score or a 370 scale score, but if it is lower other factors may allow the student to be admitted with academic restrictions.

 

Where can I take the MAT?

The MAT is offered by appointment in the Academic Support Center on the campus of Trevecca Nazarene University.  The fee is $50.00.  The MAT is offered in many other places around the country.  A list of these sites can be obtained via the internet or in the study booklet available in most book stores.

 

When are courses offered?

Course work is offered in the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.  The dates for these courses are available for three years in advance.  Specific courses are listed a year in advance.

 

Are my books included with my tuition?

No. Books must be purchased by the student.  All books required for class may be obtained in the campus bookstore.

 

What is the format for the concentrated seminars?

Most of the students in the M.A. program take course work in concentrated seminars.  Usually students take two courses each semester the first course will be taken during the first half of the seminar week [Monday 2:00-5:00, Tuesday 8:30-5:00, and Wednesday 8:30-11:30].   The same format is followed during the second half of the seminar week. The course begins on Wednesday at 2:00 and ends on Friday at 11:30.  A student is required to attend both weeks of seminars in each semester to get credit for each class.

 

What is the cost of the program?

Tuition is currently $384.00 per credit hour.  Most courses are three credit hours.


Is a campus meal plan provided?
There is no meal plan provided, but graduate students may eat in the cafeteria for a charge of $5.00 for breakfast, $6.25 for lunch and $7.75 for dinner (premium night for dinner is $8.25).

 

What is the deadline for registration?

In order to insure a place in a graduate course a student must be registered for course work no later than two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester in which the course work is taken.  

 

Are scholarships/loans available?

The only scholarship money available is for Nazarene ministers who hold at least the District License.  In order to qualify for this scholarship the student must provide a copy of either the District License or elders/deacons orders.  Students may apply for Federal Stafford loans through our financial aid office.
