Bishop Will Willimon was the keynote speaker for the 2-day conference, Preaching: God Talk, at Trevecca Nazarene Unviersity October 7-8, 2009.
Approximately 70 pastors from the southeast and other regions of the US came for opportunities to hear Willimon preach and to focus on the preaching aspects of their professions. Willimon preached 2 chapel services, gave 2 lectures, and held opportunities for Q & A.
The conference focused on preaching as a theological enterprise. In recent years, much homiletical thought has focused on mainly anthropological issues in preaching – rhetoric, listener response, cultural relevance, and other human centered concerns. The event was an attempt to regain a sense of Christian preaching as a theological enterprise. Preaching is not only talk about God; preaching is talk by God. It takes a miracle for preaching to be effective and faithful.
