Internet Access - Introducing Campus Manager Go BackNETWORK SECURITY
As you all know, “network security” is very important to us because it prevents unauthorized users from accessing our campus network and it protects the availability and performance of the campus network for all authorized users. If unauthorized users are able to access our campus network, they will generate additional network traffic and consume valuable network resources that belong to our network users. Potentially, any unauthorized user can severely disrupt our network services so we must make every effort to prevent such users from accessing our campus network. The only way to do this is to identify all authorized users – and block out everyone else from accessing our campus network! However, even after we identify students, employees and visitors as authorized network users, we still have an obligation to protect the performance and reliability of the campus network for all our authorized users. The only way to do this is to monitor all network connections (PCs, laptops, etc.) to ensure that every client is a “healthy” member of our campus network. Any client computer that displays symptoms of “illness” should be isolated from the network and placed in quarantine. This will help contain the spread of any illness. ANNOUNCING “CAMPUS MANAGER” Campus Manager will enable all computers to be “registered” for network access using a fully automated process. During the registration process, your computer will be “checked” to see if it is in good health. If it is ill, your computer will be routed to a “clinic” where you will be able to perform some minor surgery (called “remediation”). When this remediation process is complete, your computer will be checked again and network access will be granted if it is healthy. Registration is a yearly process for every network client (e.g., computer or laptop). Any visitor to the campus will need to register their computer in Campus Manager before Internet access will be granted. This includes visitors participating in any events/meetings, camps, workshops, sales presentations, demos, athletic events, etc... If you are hosting an event where visitors might bring their personal or work computers on campus, please send them the following website address no more than 2 weeks in advance so they can follow the instructions provided to register their computer(s) in Campus Manager prior to visiting our campus: http://www.trevecca.edu/its/Internet.Access. Due to liability issues and limited resources, ITS can not physically work on visitor computers so it is imperative that visitors scan and register their computers prior to bringing them on campus. Internet access will only be granted to registered visitors for the length of their visit, which may vary from one (1) day to two (2) weeks, after which time their registration will expire automatically. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Please understand that Campus Manager is not an invasion of privacy. Specifically, we are not using Campus Manager to scan personal documents, files or folders. Campus Manager probes known ports on computers to assess security vulnerabilities and to ensure that the computer is not propagating viruses such as Blaster. It also inspects the Windows system registry to ensure that critical Microsoft patches and security updates have been applied. That’s all it does! Campus Manager will not restrict Internet access. In fact, our goal is exactly the opposite. By using Campus Manager, we can ensure that “unhealthy” computers are only allowed onto the campus network when they are cleaned up. We want to provide all students, employees and visitors with high-speed, reliable Internet access and Campus Manager will help us get there! SUMMARY
Trevecca Nazarene University has made a significant investment in new technology that will provide everyone with a campus network that is fully protected from unauthorized users and that operates at the highest possible level of performance. We believe that our students, employees and visitors will benefit from the use of Campus Manager because it will ensure high-speed, reliable network and Internet access for all authorized network users. |
