Frequently Asked Questions

Which wireless network should I use?

Visitors
Visitors may use the unsecured wireless network named "Trevecca-Unplugged" as this is meant for visitors that do not have a Trevecca network account. This SSID is not encrypted and should NOT be used for official University business including student access.

Students
The wireless network named "Trevecca-Unplugged-Secure" is encrypted and is recommended for student use though not required. Students choosing NOT to utilize this secure Wi-Fi connection do so at their own risk.

Faculty, Staff and Administrators
The wireless network named "Trevecca-Unplugged-Secure" is encrypted and is required to be used by all TNU employees who utilize wireless connectivity for all TNU owned laptops, smartphones, tablets, or any other TNU owned wireless device that can utilize a secure Wi-Fi connection.

I cannot see Trevecca's wireless network from my dorm room or apartment. What can be done?

ITS (Network Services) wants to know about coverage issues in locations reported to have full coverage. You may report such problems by calling the ITS HelpDesk (x1223 or 615-248-1223). Network Services' staff will arrange for a site visit to test the signal in the identified area and take appropriate action based on findings.

Can I use my own wireless router or wireless access point?

No. It is against Trevecca Nazarene University's Acceptable Use Policy to connect your own wireless router or wireless access point anywhere on campus. Such devices can disrupt our Internet connection, preventing other users from accessing the Trevecca-Unplugged wireless network.

In addition, Trevecca Nazarene University has installed access points in all residence halls and apartments, so there is no need to bring one from home. In addition, wireless gateways (NAT routers) are not allowed.

What does "full coverage" mean?

All floors of a building with full coverage have wireless access. But just like cell phone coverage, there may be isolated "dead zones" in any given building. These weak or dead zones could be caused by interference with electronic appliances, physical barriers, or even mirrors.

Why is my wireless connection disrupted more frequently than my wired connection?

Wireless access points operate within a radio frequency range and are prone to interference from microwave ovens, other unknown access points in the area, some cordless phones and many other environmental factors that may be passing between you and the access point at any given time. Though the wireless protocol was designed to be robust, it is still a radio frequency and it can be interrupted by various pieces of equipment and/or structures.

How secure is wireless?

Wireless networks use public radio frequencies. Unsecured wireless can be listened in on (sniffed) by anyone who has the proper knowledge. Use caution and do not transmit information you deem confidential. You never know who is listening. Students and Employees can use the Secure Wireless which protects against this.

Can VPN software be used on the wireless network?

No, VPN capability is not supported.
