Position Description

The Coordinator of Student Disability Services will provide leadership to assist the university in developing and sustaining living and learning environments in which all students have an equal prospect for access, opportunity, and engagement. He/she will work with students with learning and physical disabilities to develop skills and lifelong learning strategies in overcoming barriers to learning.

 

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Collect and evaluate educational, psychological, medical, career or vocational diagnostic information to develop, implement, or revise individual academic support and accommodation eligibility following requirement of ADA, HIPAA, and FERPA.
    • Draft and implement procedures and processes to ensure equitable treatment of students with disabilities. 
  • Market, develop awareness, and educate faculty, staff, parents, and students on disability-related issues on campus.
    • Market services to encourage students with disabilities to self-identify and provide information for prospective students.
    • Manage/update disability services information on webpage.
  • Provide personal, academic, vocational, and social counseling for students with disabilities.
  • Maintain confidential files and records of counseling activities.
    • Work cooperatively with other university offices and departments responsible for providing accommodations and services to people with disabilities.
      • Provide up-to-date information to the campus community through in-service training sessions, workshops, publications, and individual meetings.
      • Consult and serve as resource to faculty and staff regarding student accommodations and disability information.
      • Serve on college committees and task forces related to accessibility, accommodations, and advocacy for students with disabilities.
    • Coordinate the provision of support activities and accommodations for individual students.  Included are the following tasks:
      • Hire note takers and tutors.
      • Oversee e-text production.
      • Administer tests to students with accommodations.
    • Research and acquire appropriate assistive technologies
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

 

 

Probation/Restriction Student Services

  • Provide general academic counseling and academic progress monitoring for probation/academic restriction students.
  • Keep accurate academic records to track academic success.
  • Manage/Update program for probation students – which might include a special seminar class for this population, an accountability process, etc.
  • Serve as advisor for students on academic probation.

 

 

Qualifications

Required:  Master’s degree in Counseling, Special Education, Student Affairs, Higher Education, or related field.  The employee must possess strong organizational skills, oral and written communication skills, have excellent computer skills, and be able to relate well to persons with different backgrounds in a variety of settings and situations. The employee must have the ability to rationalize and make recommendations/decisions in the best interest of students. He/she must have the ability and willingness to speak in front of groups and the ability to communicate in a cooperative and respectful manner.

 

Preferred:   Master’s degree in Counseling, Special Education, Student Affairs, Higher Education, or related field and at least 1-2 years of experience with disability support programs.
