B.A. In Management and Human Relations Course Descriptions

Semester I

Module 1
Adult Development and Life Planning      MHR 2000
Adult development patterns are reviewed and analyzed and goals are assessed through exercises and activities. Future trends are examined in relation to changing careers and lifestyles. A writing lab is conducted during the module and instruction in the work related research project - project thesis - begins near the end of the course.

Module 2
Systems Management      MHR 4410
This course analyzes the basic managerial functions of setting objectives, planning, organizing, directing, and controlling. Theoretical foundations and models for design and the analysis of organizational processes and human behavior in organizations are examined.

Module 3
Library Module
This module is designed to be a practical, hands-on approach to illustrating basic research strategies. Search strategies for full text electronic resources as well as print sources are demonstrated. This module provides research tools for the student's project thesis.

Module 4
Group and Organizational Behavior      MHR 3030
This module is a study of group behavior and how group functioning affects organizational effectiveness. Emphasis is placed on decision making and productive group management in order for students to determine which tasks are best handled by groups or individuals.

Module 11, Part I
Project Thesis, Part I      MHR 4520
Project Thesis is an applied research project that examines a problem in the student's work place or other organization. The student defines the problem and writes the first two chapters of the thesis in semester one.

Semester II

Module 5
Statistical Methods and Research      MHR 3040
Problem analysis and evaluation techniques are presented. Students are shown methods for defining, researching, analyzing, and evaluating a problem requiring solution within their work or a vocational environment. Specific statistical information covered in the course includes developing and measuring objectives, collecting data, working with significance levels, analyzing variance, and constructing questionnaires.

Module 6
Biblical Perspectives      MHR 2010
This course reflects TNU's commitment, as a Christian liberal arts college, to nurturing an appreciation for Scripture as the basis for creative personal faith and human life in the modern world. It is designed to foster knowledge and understanding of the literature and history of the Bible, and to integrate faith, learning, and living.

Module 7
Effective Interpersonal Relations      MHR 3010
This module investigates communication and relationships in a productive work environment. Effectiveness in personal and social relationships is also covered through readings and exercises reviewing nonverbal communication, constructive feedback, dealing with anger and resolving conflict. Students develop a model for effective relationships. Students are also given instruction in public speaking in preparation for their first Project Thesis oral presentation.

Module 11, Part II
Project Thesis, Part II      MHR 4521
Students continue their research and practical implementation of the project thesis. Students write chapters 3-5 and give their first oral presentation in semester two.

Semester III

Module 8
Human Resources Management      MHR 4420
Students analyze the policies and procedures of business regarding the recruitment, selection, training, evaluation, development, and compensation of employees. Special attention is given to Equal Employment Opportunity and Occupational Safety and Health Administration legislation through a series of case studies and simulation.

Module 9
Values: Personal and Social      MHR 4510
In this capstone course the student formulates a philosophy of life, providing a foundation for such concerns as ethics in business, accountability in government, respect for human rights, and a responsible lifestyle in the contemporary world. Ethical theories and personal values are examined through readings, analysis of the workplace, international relations, and classroom discussion.

Module 10
Principles of Management and Supervision      MHR 4430
Students examine motivational theory and its application to individual and group functioning in work and home situations. Leadership styles related to profit and non-profit organizations are analyzed. The concept of negotiation is reviewed through readings and class activities, with an analysis of the effect on productivity.

Module 11, Part III
Project Thesis, Part III      MHR 4522
The student's project thesis is completed in semester three and orally presented to the instructor, class, site contacts, and guests.
