Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  How does the accelerated bachelor degree program in management and human relations (MHR) work?

A:  MHR is a degree-completion program for working adults who cannot attend classes during the day. Students must be at least 23 years of age and have 60 semester hours or more of prior college credit. If a student transfers in less than 84 hours, he or she must earn additional credit through traditional or non-traditional methods.

Q: How do I earn credit outside the classroom?

A: Students are able to earn credit toward their degree for knowledge gained on the job or through other life experiences. MHR students may earn credit toward the degree through the following means:
• Taking standardized tests (CLEP and DANTES)
• Writing Life Learning papers
• Completing professional training (i.e., banking, insurance, real estate license, etc.)
• Military training
MHR staff will educate students about this aspect of the program in the admissions interview and at a special session during the program.

Q: How long does it take to get my degree?

A: If you meet all graduation requirements, you can finish in as little as 13 months (the length of the program). If you need additional hours, you will need to complete them during this time period if you plan to graduate in 13 months.

Q: How do the classes work?

A: The 10 MHR courses are referred to as modules. Most modules are condensed into five sessions that meet one night a week from 6-10 P.M. You take the courses one at a time in sequence.

Q: What is management and human relations?

A: The MHR curriculum is interdisciplinary and social-science based. Courses emphasize working effectively with people in organizations.

Q: Can I get financial aid?

A: Yes. MHR students are considered full-time students and are eligible for federal financial aid. Most students qualify for loans and/or grants. Your best advice regarding financial aid will come from Trevecca's FA office (615-248-1242) or by visiting www.fafsa.ed.gov to apply for financial aid. Be sure to use Trevecca’s school code (003526).

Q: What are the major admissions requirements?

A:
• 60 semester hours of prior college work with 30 hours in general education
• Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA from previous college hours
• Age 23 or above
• Successful completion of entrance exams (math and writing)
• Assessment interview, if applicable, to discuss your potential for testing and earning prior-learning credit

Once Trevecca receives your application and transcripts, MHR personnel will call you to make an appointment for your testing and interview.  Please note, we will need one official transcript from every school attended.

If you have a copy of your transcripts, you can fax those to your local MHR office for an unofficial estimate.  Please include your contact information on the cover sheet.

Twice a year at Columbia State Community College in Columbia
Once a year at Columbia State Community College in Franklin

Q: For what kind of jobs does the degree prepare me?

A: The MHR Program is designed to enhance a working student’s experience base. The degree prepares students for advancement to supervisor, team leader, and mid-level to upper-level management.

There are many occupations the MHR degree prepares students for, some of which include insurance, banking, manufacturing, food service, consulting, human resources, sales, customer service, health services, telecommunications, etc.

Many graduates also go on to pursue higher education in various master’s programs. Trevecca Nazarene University offers master’s degrees in
business, counseling, education, library science, religion, and medicine (physician assistant). Feel free to call Trevecca for more information.

Q: How do I earn a degree in management information systems?

A: The student must have earned an associate of science degree from Nashville State Community College with either a major in computer information systems or computer networking technology. Similar degrees from other accredited institutions may also be evaluated for approval for admission to the MIS coursework. The student must meet all other MHR admissions requirements in order to begin the coursework. Once the student has met all requirements, he or she will begin the MHR 13-month program. During the program, the topic of the project thesis must be in the area of information systems and technology. In addition, the student must also take the following MIS modules: The Systems Development Process, Information Technology Project Management, and Managing Computer-Based Information Technology. The student will then be eligible for the bachelor of science in management information systems.
