Trevecca student killed in auto accident

Robert Garrett II
1983-2004

Trevecca student Robert Garrett II was killed in a car accident early Thursday morning in Nashville, Tennessee. Rob, the son of Robert and Janice Garrett, attended Antioch High School in Antioch, Tennessee, and was a member of the Trevecca mens basketball team. Rob planned to begin his senior season with the Trojans in the fall.

Rob had been playing basketball at Trevecca on the night of August 25 and had returned home to pick up more of his possessions to complete his moving back into the dorm for the new school year when his auto was struck by a pick-up truck whose driver failed to stop for a stop light. Both drivers were killed, and acccording to the police, there was no sign that alcohol was a factor in the accident.

Rob was loved and appreciated at Trevecca. He had developed the reputation as a hard worker and as a young man who was serious about his commitment to Christ.  Rob is one of those guys you enjoy watching come through Trevecca and watching him mature into a young man, Alan Smith, Trevecca Athletic Director, said. Our last conversation was about making sure he was prepared to graduate this year.

As a member of the men's basketball team for three years, Rob had scored a total of 236 career points and 133 career rebounds. He also shot 53.7% from the field and 68.3% from the free throw line. Robs best year came during the 2003-04 season when he played in all 31 games for the Trojans as a forward and started in 19 games scoring 213 points and grabbing 101 rebounds on the season while averaging 24.3 minutes of playing time per game. Garrett also swiped 38 steals and dished out 57 assists on the season.

Speaking for the University, President Millard Reed said: The University family is saddened by the news of the death of Robert Garrett, one of its members. Robert made it clear to those who knew him best that he had come to college in order to become better, to be the person that God intended that he would be. He will be missed at Trevecca.

In his high school days, Garrett attended Antioch High School where he earned All-Region and All-State honors in basketball and All-Region honors in track. Garrett also led his basketball team to Sectional and District Championships.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete (as of this writing 8/27).

Students at Trevecca have erected a banner in Rob's honor, and students are using it to write their memories of Rob and their messages to his family.
