The January 2005 issue of Sports Nashville
features an article about the late Rob Garrett II, a former basketball
player for Trevecca Nazarene University who was killed in a tragic
automobile accident a few days before the fall 2004 semester started.
This article stands apart from other articles about Garrett because it
covers the life that his basketball fans did not see. Interviews with
GarrettÃs coach, his father, and his teammates are the basis of this
solid article about the memory of a young man who was recognized as a
disciplined, motivated, and strong person. The persons interviewed
recall that when Garrett first joined the Trojans, he relied heavily on
his individualism to make an impact. Each also noted that as he
continued to play he learned the value of hard work and discipline; he
learned how to be a member of a team; and he became an inspiration to
people on and off the court. In more ways that one, Garrett
demonstrated what it means to love people, and he left his mark on the
other members of the Trojans basketball team. Even after his death, Rob
is an example to his teammates.
