Sweet 16
JACKSON, Tenn. - NAIA No. 13 Trevecca (21-9) advanced to the NAIA
Sweet 16 with a 71-68 win over Cumberland College (21-10) in the first round of the 25th Annual
NAIA Division I National Women's Basketball Tournament in Jackson, Tenn. at Oman Arena.

before. Iím glad we got the win.î
Trevecca opened the
game with a 6-0 run but Cumberland College battled back to lead by as much as
four points in the first half. The Patriots led 14-10 with 11:33 in the first
half, but the Trojans took the lead on a 7-0 run and eventually to a 27-25
advantage at half time. The second half saw Cumberland College lead by as much
as six points, but and Ashlie Gilland field goal with 3:30 left in the game gave
Trevecca the lead for good. The Patriotsí Tiffany Stewart had a shot at a last
second buzzer beater but the off-balance three pointer fell well short and the
Trojans took the 71-68 win.
Treveccaís Ashlie
Gilland scored 18 points in the winning effort while junior Jackie Weaver added
18 points and 13 rebounds. Mariska Reed (13) and Jana Reed (11) also added
double figure scoring.
Cumberland Collegeís Tiffany Stewart
led all scoring with 22 points on the night.
The
Trojans shot 45.3% (24 of 53) from the field, 22.2% (2 of 9) from the three
point line, and 65.6% (21 of 32) from the free throw line. Cumberland shot 39.7% (23 of 58)
from the field, 33.3% (7 of 21) from the three point line, and 93.8% (15 of 16)
from the free throw line.
Trevecca will face
No. 8 Southern Nazarene (28-6) at 4:30 p.m. on Friday in the Sweet 16 of the
NAIA National Tournament.

top seeded Mountain State University (30-3) Lionís on Friday at 4:30 p.m. in the
Sweet 16 of the 68th Annual NAIA Division I Menís Basketball
Tournament at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.
