Career preparation and opportunity are readily available for students when they enter Trevecca. The Office of Career Services offers workshops, job fairs, and one-on-one counseling intended to help students find the most appropriate career goals, internships, and employment.
One of those services took place on Thursday, September 25, when Career Placement Counselor Jan Harvey delivered a presentation to members of the Student Government Association, who had returned to school early in order to prepare for the new school year. Harvey, one of the speakers in the annual Leadership Summit for student leaders, encouraged students to build professional relationships with Christians and non-Christians and to learn to shift their focus from themselves to other people so that students can become valuable in the work culture. Harvey suggested ways that students can prepare now for future careers: get focused, complete self-awareness evaluations, prepare a one- or two-minute presentation about who they are, create a portfolio about one’s accomplishments/activities, document leadership positions one filled, keep photographic journals of one doing the work. Harvey had the students complete a self-awareness evaluation that was designed to help them start thinking about what they have to offer an employer.
This week on the first day of classes in the new school year, the Office of Career Services hosted a job fair in the lobby of the Jernigan Student Center. Fourteen employers from the city recruited students for employment. Students applied with many organizations—including Toys ‘R’ Us, Walgreen’s, FedEx, United Parcel Service, Pier 1 Imports, and United Methodist Publishing House.
Another career fair will be held in the spring semester, but in the meantime the Office of Career services will continue to offer students opportunities to prepare themselves for the work force. The Office of Career Services is open from 8:00 A.M.-4:30 P.M. and can be found on the Web at (http://www.trevecca.edu/student.life/career.services/students/placement.html).
