Trevecca alumnus to lead baseball program at Lee University

Lee University has announced the selection of Mark Brew, an assistant baseball coach, to fill the head coaching position for Lee's baseball program when David Altopp resigns from that position later this year. For the past 10 years Brew has assisted Altopp, serving as director of the pitching staff and being in charge of maintaining all of Lee's athletic fields.

Brew and Altopp have a long history of working together. Brew played for Altopp at Trevecca when Altopp led the baseball program there. Brew was Altopp's assistant at Trevecca, and when Altopp accepted the head coaching position at Lee, Brew joined him there.

About Brew's appointment, Altopp said, "I know of no young coach more ready to be a head college baseball coach thn (Mark) Brew. I hve known him for 16 years, including three that he played for me at Trevecca. He was a student assistant after completing his eligibility for one year and has been my full-time assistant for the past 12 years, all ten [of Altopp's years] here at Lee. Thus, he has been my assistant for three times longer than any of my other assistant coaches over the past 35 years."

Brew, a native of Smyrna, Tenn., was an NAIA Scholar-Athlete during his Trevecca years. In his senior year he was named Trevecca's Outstanding Christian Athlete. Brew was Trevecca's top hitter in 1990 and was Trojans' closer for four years. After graduating from Trevecca with a bachelor's degree in physical education, Brew was employed by the Metro Nashville Public School System before his move to Lee. He and his wife, Rachel, have a daughter and are expecting another child.
