Athletic Director Alan Smith to retire in May

Trevecca Nazarene University Athletic Director Alan Smith has announced this will be his final year at the helm of the Trevecca athletic department.

Smith first came to Trevecca in 1972 to launch the men’s and women’s tennis program. After 20 years of coaching the men’s tennis team, Smith began as athletics director in 1998. His tenure has seen the addition of four sports (men's and women's teams in golf and soccer) and building two on-campus facilities. Trevecca’s softball and soccer facilities were added, and major improvements were made to the baseball field.

Since Smith was named Trevecca’s athletic director every team has reached further into the postseason and achieved a higher NAIA ranking than any previous team has with one exception. Trevecca athletes and coaches have set a record for most conference, regional and national awards in each of Smith’s eight seasons as athletic director.

Smith’s services to Trevecca have been recognized on both a local and national scale. This past year, he was named NAIA Region XI Athletic Director of the Year and TranSouth Athletic Director of the Year. Smith was inducted into the Trevecca Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993. In 1995 Smith was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame. Smith was the first, and remains the only, person from Trevecca to be inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame.
