Lady Trojans win first game in NAIA National Basketball Tournament

NAIA #9 Trevecca won its first game in the 2007 NAIA National Tournament against the #25 Westmont Collge Warriors of Santa Barbara, Calif., yesterday in Jackson, Tenn. In their eighth trip to the NAIA, the Lady Trojans came from behind in the early part of the game to advance to the NAIA Sweet 16 for the third consecutive year.

Westmont caught the Trojans by surprise in the first 10 minutes of the game and had a 27-27 lead, but the Trojans rallied and closed the first half with a 10-0 run, ending the half with a tied score, 27-27. The Trojans continued their strong run in the second half, making 13 straight points. The final score was 76-53.

Top scorers for Trevecca were the following: Mariska Reed, 16; Kristin Archie, 15, and Abby Lawson, 12. Rebound leaders were Amy Hutchins and Jennifer Bognar, six each. Reed had four assists, and Archie shot 4-for-5 from distance and 10-for-15 at the foul line.

The Lady Trojans advance to the second round at 9 A.M. on Friday, 3/16, and will play the third-seeded Carroll Fighting Saints (30-4) of Montana. Carroll defeated Xavier (La.) in their first round game 56-50.
