Trevecca Nazarene University

Trevecca honors first intercollegiate athletic team

Trevecca Nazarene University will honor their first intercollegiate athletic team (1968-1969 Men’s Basketball team) at the beginning of the men’s homecoming game on Saturday. The introductions will occur at about 2:15 PM in Moore Gym on the Trevecca campus.

All but one of the living players are retuning and both coaches are returning. Elmer Heaberlin started the season as the head coach, but resigned before the season and Bill Boner took over the coaching position for the rest of the season and continued the following season. Gary Smith from Leesburg, Virginia, is bringing an original jersey and some other memorabilia. Al Boatman, Trevecca’s first African-American athlete, is coming from Florida

Bill Boner went on to be a congressman and also served as the Mayor of Nashville. Byron Bush served as a dentist in the Nashville area.
