University President Dan Boone led the procession of one of the University’s largest graduating classes.
The University awarded its first PhD degrees to students who completed doctoral work in Clinical Counseling within the Graduate Psychology Program. Trevecca had been given approval to convert its doctoral major in Clinical Counseling from a doctor of education (EdD) to a doctor of philosophy (PhD) earlier this year by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS COC).
Trevecca paused to award 2 honorary degrees to long-time friends of the University Donald Fred Waggoner and Zelma Wallace Waggoner. Through the work of the Don and Zelma Waggoner Foundation, the two had contributed to numerous major humanitarian and church-related projects, and named Trevecca the recipient of their generosity in 1996 with the donation of funds for the new entrance, and in 2000, with the donation of funds for the new library, which was named in their honor.
The challenge to the Graduates was delivered by Leroy Pepper, Associate Professor of History and Political Science. Pepper challenged those before him to “walk with Jesus” in their future professions and pursuits. Responses were given by Jackie Winkle, for the senior class; Dana Salters, for MHR; and Nadia Saint-Louis, for graduate programs.
Special music was provided by graduating senior Stefanie Wienecke, who performed “Call on Jesus” by Nicole C. Mullen. A Scripture reading was provided by Monica Parker, Associate Professor of Biology.
Other features of this year’s Graduation events included a Baccalaureate Service held in the evening Friday, May 6. Baccalaureate featured worship music by a team of students and graduates, congregational litany led by Chaplain Tim Green, and message by President Boone “Blessed to be a Blessing.”
Team members in Trevecca’s new Alumni Center hosted an after-Commencement Graduation Reception, providing refreshments, gifts, and space for fellowship in the University’s newest building addition.
