Baseball Coach Mike Lord Resigns

Trevecca Nazarene University head baseball coach Mike Lord has announced his resignation, effective immediately because of family health issues. Lord and his wife, Denise, moved to Tennessee from California, where they had lived and where their families remain. The Lords have decided to return to California for those reasons. Coach Lord has included a letter to the Trevecca family. That letter is included below.

Lord, who brought vast college and major league baseball experience to the program, served as the head coach of the baseball program for the past season, compiling a 19-22-1. The team was 11-11-1 in TranSouth Conference play.

Trevecca athletic director Mark Elliott said, “Mike Lord was the right choice for the job. I was concerned about the rich tradition, history, and success. But I knew that new leadership from an experienced baseball man was necessary. Mike was a perfect fit for Trevecca’s mission and our department’s expectations. We are losing a wonderful person and a great coach. I am losing a close friend and spiritual confidant. But ultimately he is making the right choice, and I totally support his decision. He will always be part of the family.”

Under Lord, the team had four NAIA Scholar-Athletes, 16 TranSouth Scholar Athletes, three NCCAA Student Athletes of the Week, three TranSouth Players of the Week, and one Capitol One Academic All-District honoree.

Mike Lord led Trevecca through its first year of transition to NCAA Division-ll membership. In 2012-2013 Trevecca will compete for the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) and NCCAA Mid-East Regional Championships. Trevecca will play a modified schedule that will include Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) games. The GMAC is a new NCAA Division-ll conference in whichTrevecca is a charter member.

Lord, though resigning as head coach, plans to help scouting and recruiting for the baseball program while in California. Lord said, “I plan to be a resource for the program, especially for the players we’ve signed this year. I will be the West Coast eyes and ears for Trojan baseball.”

A search for a new head baseball coach has already begun. Assistant coaches Matt Thomas and Luke Brown will lead the program during the interim period.

Mike Lord’s Letter to the Trevecca Family is included here:

“It is with a heavy but decided heart that I need to announce my resignation as head baseball coach at TNU. I ask for your grace and understanding as this decision did not come easy, but due to ongoing family issues, it is the right decision.

“The most important things I’d like to convey to everyone is how much I have enjoyed my time at TNU and what a special place it is. Since day one, the administration, as well as every department on campus, has been accommodating and supportive.

“I will never be able to put into words how amazing Mark Elliott has been, as well as my fellow coaches. Mark is everything an athletic department needs in a leader, and I am fortunate to be able to call him my friend.

“I have enjoyed every moment coaching this team and will miss everything that goes into putting a season together. Most of all I will miss Matt Thomas and Luke Brown, two of the most amazing men I have ever met. These are special guys with a special commitment to TNU baseball. I leave knowing they are really the backbone of this program. With their hard work, this year has produced one of the best recruiting classes we have seen. I know the future is bright for TNU baseball.

“Although my time here was brief, I leave with great memories, new friendships, and a special place in my heart for TNU." — Mike Lord
