TNaz Jazz spreads its wings: Competes in jazz festival and later performs with jazz legend

The TNaz Jazz Ensemble competed in the 47th Annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival in Chicago, Illinois, in February. During the four-day festival, TNaz performed a 20-minute set near the end of the Friday afternoon session. Jazz legends Bobby Shew, Andy Martin, and Gary Smulyan served as the panel of adjudicators for the festival. The panel recognized Spencer Stevens, playing alto sax, and Andrew Riley, playing tenor sax, for the outstanding musicianship each displayed during his improvised solos.

On February 25, TNaz Jazz hosted the acclaimed Ron Jones Quartet at Trevecca. Members of the Quartet conducted a jazz clinic for Trevecca students during the afternoon; during that session, several Trevecca students had the opportunity to perform with the Quartet.  When TNazJazz performed in its annual spring jazz concert, the Ron Jones Quartet performed with it during the second half of the concert.  The Ron Jones Quartet, led by jazz saxophonist Ron Jones, is known as a “traditional swing group” with a “Louisville-flavored sound.” Trevecca students expressed their appreciation of the opportunity to learn from Jones and his Quartet.
