Mackey Building: Home of the School of Education

The unit has outstanding facilities on campus and with partner schools to support candidates in meeting standards. Facilities support the most recent developments in technology that allow faculty to model the use of technology and candidates to practice its use for instructional purposes.

The renovated Mackey Building is the site for the School of Education’s undergraduate, master’s degree, and doctoral-level classes and administrative offices. Named for Dr. A. B. and Mrs. Lyla Mackey, a former president and a head librarian at Trevecca, the Mackey Building was the University’s library prior to the construction of the Waggoner Library.

Ten classrooms, located in the lower and main levels of the building and equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including SmartBoards, provide excellent settings for classroom activities. Two of the classrooms were designed to replicate an elementary school classroom and are used extensively by the teacher education department. Two computer labs, one equipped with PCs and the other with Macintosh computers, are on the lower level of the building. The labs are used for courses and are scheduled for independent use by students throughout the day and evening.

The entry hall on the main level showcases the Education Research Endowment Tree that identifies donors who support faculty research. The Lamp of Learning, a decorative insignia in the porcelain tile floor, is an appropriate feature to welcome visitors to the building.

The offices of the dean of the School of Education and the full-time faculty and staff of the School of Education are located on the upper level.
