Interviewing

It’s not always the most qualified person who gets the job but the one most prepared for the interview. Interviewing well is a skill which can be learned. Take the time to research the common mistakes made and the correct way to approach a professional interview. Employers hire because of two things: “skills” and “fit.” You must know as much about both as you can.  How you communicate your “skills” and your “fit” with the organization will be determined by how you answer their questions and how you look and present.

Always dress professionally for an interview. Dress for the salary expected. If a 25K salary is expected—look like you earn 25K. If 40K is expected, look like 40K.

To prepare for an interview, do the following:

  • ***Research the company!!! ****
  • Know how to control body language to make the best first impression
  • Know business and dining etiquette (many second interviews are over dinner)
  • Know traditional and behavioral interview questions
  • Know your strengths and growth areas
  • Know why you want to work there
  • Do a mock interview with the career placement counselor
  • Know how to follow up after a successful interview

The Trevecca Office of Career Services provides video-taped mock interviews to assist you with the interview process. Contact the career placement counselor to arrange a mock interview or to get personal instruction on preparing for an interview (615-248-1237).
