Fire Safety

Fire safety in a residence hall or apartment is everyone’s responsibility. Residents must follow the following fire safety procedures:

  • Turn off electric blankets, irons, lamps and curling irons right after use.
  • Never cover lamps with bed clothing to avoid bothering your roommate.
  • Never cover wall heaters with clothing (to dry them).
  • Keep hallways, stairwells, and exit paths clear at all times.

Some things are prohibited:

  • Smoking is prohibited anywhere on the Trevecca campus.
  • Candles, incense, and other open flame devices are not allowed in residence halls or apartments.
  • Do not overload circuits by plugging too many appliances into one outlet. If two or more appliances with a cumulative wattage of more than 1,500 watts are used, you must have an Underwriter Laboratory-approved power strip with a built-in circuit breaker (15 amp or less).

Report all violations or fire hazards to the RA immediately and follow these actions if a fire occurs:

  • If you discover a fire, sound the alarm and immediately vacate the building.
  • If your clothing catches on fire, drop to the floor and roll out the fire.
  • ALWAYS take fire alarms seriously, and vacate the building by assigned routes.
