The professional counseling services of the Career and Counseling
Center seek to provide assistance with students’ personal and mental
health needs from a Christian perspective. Students receive help
with a variety of concerns, including emotional, social, academic,
adjustment, relationship, developmental, family, and spiritual
issues. Services include the following:
- Confidential individual, couples, and family and premarital counseling for engaged couples by appointment
- Small groups which address a variety of needs such as coping with the loss of a family member
- Referrals to outside the community and Christian
agencies/resources for long-term counseling and students who prefer an
off-campus location
- Resources (books, articles, brochures) and information on various
personal and social issues and mental health concerns, such as
depression, eating disorders, stress, abuse, date rape, sexual
identity, family relationships, and others
Individual counseling is available to current students only. Alumni and campus personnel are permitted one consultation/referral
appointment. Personal counseling is provided to students on a
first-come-first-serve basis (except for emergencies). In order
to remain available to as many students as possible, students who wish
long-term counseling are assisted in locating a resource
off-campus. Appointments are made at the Career and Counseling
Center or by calling 615-248-1237 and are scheduled between 8:00 A.M.-4:30
P.M. Monday-Friday, depending on counselor availability.
Couples and family counseling are available to current students and
their significant other. See information under Individual
Counseling.
The Career and Counseling Center provides premarital counseling for
pre-engaged and engaged couples. Students usually complete the
PREPARE inventory or the Taylor Johnson Temperament Analysis
(TJTA). After tests are scored, the couple meets with a counselor
for several weeks to discuss the relational strengths and to explore
areas where further growth is advised. In the spring of each
academic year, the Career and Counseling Center sponsors a premarital
workshop.
