From devastation . . . to self discovery
“A crisis in my family after I began Trevecca had a devastating effect on me, caused me to struggle with my own identity, and resulted in my making some bad decisions. I left college and worked at a variety of jobs, but all the while I was trying to find out who I was.
“One of my jobs was in a program for troubled youths, and that job led to my working with offenders, counseling them and helping in court-ordered programs. A friend and mentor encouraged me to return to college, and I came back to Trevecca and completed my degree in 1999. That family crisis and my work with offenders had taught me that I wanted to help people make better decisions and choices.
“My life changed in my second attempt at college, and Trevecca did for me what higher education is supposed to do—help a person answer the tough questions in life. Additionally, I became aware of who I was as a person and what my purpose in life is. My Trevecca professors helped me through a rough period in my life, and I would not have made it to this place without their help. My professors helped me come out on the other side of my “questioning phase” and renew my faith in God. At Trevecca I made friends whom I still have now, friends who love and care for me.
“Today I am happily married, a state and nationally licensed alcohol and drug abuse counselor, and the owner of a business, and I am rewarded daily as I help others through their crises.”
