![]() Lilian Mwangi Class of 2008 From hurting . . . to healing “As a child of a single mother in Nairobi, Kenya, I had no hope of going to college, but I listened to the words of my pastor, who said, ‘God answers prayers of those serve others. Be faithful where you work or serve and God will be faithful.’ “When I graduated from high school, I went to work for an organization that uses sports to educate, serve, and raise the goals of children in the slums. As a soccer player myself, I trained girls, twelve years of age and younger. Teaching soccer was a way to empower those girls, to help them discover their talents and their possibilities. “Beyond my job, had no future as a soccer player in Kenya, but Trevecca invited me to play soccer on its team. Because of the opportunity that Trevecca gave me, I have earned the college degree that I dreamed about, and I am proving to girls from my home country that playing sports can become an ‘open door’ of opportunity. “When I came to Trevecca, I was hurting. My family members had made poor choices, and I suffered for them. I was emotionally ‘shut in’ by that suffering. I know now that God brought me to Trevecca in order to heal me. God used the chapel services to minister to me and placed people in my way who encouraged to me. “I know that my pastor’s words are true: God is who he says he is; he will take care of me.” Lilian will graduate from Trevecca in May 2008 with a degree in information technology. In addition to playing on the Trevecca women’s soccer team, she also worked part-time for Trevecca Plant Operations. Her internship with Trevecca’s Information Technology Services turned into a part-time job with that department. She would like to find a job in the healthcare field. |
