MyRanda Wright
Class of 2008

From coasting . . . to taking responsibility

”In my previous years of school, I failed to develop good study skills, and after I entered Trevecca, I soon realized that my good work ethic would not compensate for my weak study skills.

“Being on the basketball team helped me to see that my progress is really up to me. The daily team practices, weightlifting, individual shooting practice, and my running on my own—these necessary parts of every day helped me develop a stronger work ethic.

“The interest of my professors also helped me. Because my professors at Trevecca demonstrated that they wanted me to succeed, I began working to become a better student. One of my professors told me, “You can’t simply study one hour for a test; you must study all semester.” I listened to my professors, worked to become better organized, and things started coming together for me.

“I realized that I could take responsibility for my own life, and my grades started reflecting my new outlook. In my senior year I had the best grades of my four years of college. Along the way I discovered that I have much more in my future than I had dreamed possible. Additionally, working in summer basketball campus helped me find my ‘calling,’ and I know that I want to be a teacher.”

In her senior year at Trevecca, MyRanda won the 2008 NAIA Champions of Character Award and the 2008 Walter Knipper Civitan Award for Sportsmanship. MyRanda is the assistant basketball coach at Martin Luther King High School in Nashville and is making plans to attend graduate school.
