The School of Music is looking forward to meeting incoming students at orientation and giving them the opportunity to pursue their passions through the duration of their time as a Trevecca student. Orientation is the time to consider the various options and take first steps into majors and programs.
2019 Orientation Dates:
June 21-22: June New Student Orientation
August 22-26: August New Student Orientation
June 21st and August 22nd:
- 8:15-9 AM: School of Music and Worship Arts Informational Meeting
All School of Music and Worship Arts students and parents are invited to attend the informational meeting in the Jackson Center for Music and Worship Arts. You will need to register in the lobby before attending the meeting. Please plan to register with Admissions prior to the meeting. Department of Music Students (Commercial Music, Music Education, Music Performance, Songwriting, Recording Technology, and Theory and Composition) and some Worship Arts students (in consultation with Dr. Sam Green) that still need to complete entrance requirements will receive instruction from this meeting. National Praise and Worship Institute and all Worship Arts students will have a separate meeting to provide further information immediately following this meeting.
- 9 AM: National Praise and Worship Institute and Worship Arts Breakout Sessions
All National Praise and Worship Institute and Worship Arts students and parents will go into a breakout session with the faculty of NPWI or Worship Arts for more details on the program and requirements.
- 9 AM – 11 AM: Entrance Auditions and Placement Tests
These tests and auditions are required for all Department of Music Majors and for some Worship Arts majors. The purpose of these are to determine entrance status for Department of Music students and to help place students in the appropriate starting class in each area. A personalized schedule will be provided to each Department of Music student in the informational meeting. Worship Arts students will determine a time for testing and auditioning after their breakout session.
Theory Diagnostic Test: This test will cover topics such as key signatures, time signatures, scales, and basic analysis. This is an entrance requirement for music majors. Students may also register for the free, online, Music Fundamentals course which takes place beginning at the end of June; passing this class meets the necessary theory prerequisite requirement. Please call the School of Music and Worship Arts at 615-248-1288 to sign-up or receive more information.
Piano Placement Test: All Department of Music students and some Worship Arts students are required to take this test. This does not determine music major standing but is necessary to place the student into the most appropriate starting class.
Applied Area Audition: Students will be placed based on their score on a performance rubric. The areas evaluated include basic technique, performance, level, and musicality. Each area has different requirements which can be found here. This is an entrance requirement for music majors. Students may also submit a video audition prior to August orientation. For details on submission, please contact the School of Music and Worship Arts at 615-248-1288.
- 11 AM – 1 PM: Music Ensemble Auditions
Any student desiring participation in any vocal or instrumental ensemble(s) must audition in Jackson Center for Music and Worship Arts. Non-Major students are welcome to join ensembles. Applied area auditions for Department of Music major students meet the necessary audition requirements for ensembles, but any music major wishing to audition for an ensemble with a different applied area should prepare and signup for a separate audition. Auditions can be scheduled on Friday morning in the lobby of the Jackson building. Below are the requirements of the auditions:
Vocalists: sing a simple song, match pitch, sight read, and have their range checked
Orchestral Instruments: play two short (30 seconds to a minute) excerpts of music – one lyrical and one technical, play scales, and/or sight-read.
Guitar and Bass Guitar, Percussion, Commercial Vocal Ensemble: Separate auditions will be held after classes begin.
If you have any questions, please contact The School of Music and Worship Arts at 615-248-1288.
