University statement regarding offensive social media post

In the last few days, we have become aware of offensive social media comments posted by one of our students. University officials quickly responded to the post and the student involved, seeking to deal with the issue face-to-face and with dignity for all involved.

Trevecca rejects all statements that devalue people, all of whom are created in the image of God. At Trevecca, we welcome and desire diversity in our student body. We are committed to creating a community in which all people know they are loved, respected and valued.

“The Trevecca community—students, faculty, staff, employees and alumni—is grieved by the insensitivity of one student’s social media comments,” said Dr. Dan Boone, Trevecca president. “We are attempting to bring reconciliation between the student and those affected by her comments, and reconciliation is not instant. We are trying to heal a relationship rather than retaliate.

“The last few months in our nation have been marked by deep division,” Boone continued. “Our prayer is that healing and reconciliation can begin on our campus and across the nation.”
