Trevecca lost a friend and supporter with the death of William (Bill) Terrell Graves (79), of Birmingham, Alabama, on January 18, 2014, following a brief illness. Graves and his late wife, Jean Hurt Graves, were generous donors to Trevecca, having given Trevecca one of its earliest million-dollar gifts and establishing the Jean Hurt Graves Endowed Scholarship for students at Trevecca. Through the years they attended events at Trevecca and demonstrated their interest in Trevecca’s progress, accomplishments, and students.

Graves was born on November 26, 1934, in Franklin, Tennessee. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Tennessee and a master’s in mathematics at the University of Michigan. He first worked at an actuary for Liberty National Life Insurance Company, and he retired from Torchmark Corporation as its executive vice president after more than 30 years of service.

The funeral service for Graves was conducted on January 21, at First United Methodist Church in Birmingham, where Graves had been a member for 26 years.

The family requested that memorials be made to the Jean Hurt Graves Endowed Scholarship or to First United Methodist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.
