General Summary

The Student Success Advisor works directly with adult students to provide guidance in various administrative duties including program planning, class scheduling, and registration. The advisor is the primary student support contact to ensure the successful completion of students’ academic goals.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides academic advising for prospective and current students
    • Develops a degree completion plan that includes the core courses required for the degree and a plan for meeting any additional elective and general education hours needed to graduateWorks with Admissions and Registration to assess prior learning and transfer credits
    • Schedules advising sessions to review student degree completion plan
    • Upholds academic policies and communicates these to students and faculty when necessary
  • Provides services for students
    • Serves as a contact for students and facilitates referrals to various individuals, departments, and resources
    • Initiates regular contact with cohorts through emails, and phone calls, and sometimes class visits to develop and maintain relationships and provide effective guidance to students
  • Guides students’ academic progress from acceptance to graduation.
    • Monitors GPA and attendance to proactively assist students with achieving their academic goals
    • Conducts audits of students who are nearing degree completion for deficiencies in earned hours and GPAs
    • Helps students navigate possible academic obstacles to return to good academic status and maintain progress towards graduation
    • Assists students through the graduation process
  • Other student success responsibilities.
    • Informs the Director of Student Success and Advising of arising concerns or issues
    • Assists with graduation planning and student events as needed
    • Facilitates the academic policies orientation during Convocation for face-to-face cohorts as needed
    • Creatively engages students to increase retention and overall student success
    • Completes other tasks as assigned by the Director of Student Success and Advising

Qualifications

  • Master's degree preferred, but not required
  • 2-5 years experience in higher education
  • Experience working with adult learners preferred
  • Good organizational, problem solving, and analytical skills to manage processes
  • Positive outlook to effectively motivate people and ability to work in an enthusiastic team environment
  • Responds well to change, can meet deadlines, and is able to prioritize tasks on a daily and weekly basis
  • Excellent communication skills (including face-to-face, telephone, email, video-conferencing)
  • Evening hours once to twice a month and flexible schedule required a to accommodate the needs of adult learners
