The Eden Project

A program of Trevecca Urban Farm

The Eden Project is a program of Trevecca’s Urban Farm that equips local Nazarene churches to engage youth in planting and protecting trees in and for their communities.

This program is funded by a grant from American Forests.

Why Trees?

In urban communities, trees can make the difference between health and illness, life and death.

Continual deforestation and urban development have led to the loss of urban tree canopy. In addition to worsening soil erosion, flooding, crop loss, drought, crime and public health, an absence of tree canopy contributes to heat being the deadliest weather-related killer in the United States.

Heat-related deaths are on the rise, especially in urban areas where it may be 29 degrees hotter than a forested area less than 10 miles away.

One of the best ways to love our neighbors is by planting trees because they…

  • Produce clean air
  • Trigger rain
  • Slow storm water
  • Mitigate pollution
  • Prevent flooding
  • Feed rivers
  • Offer nectar and homes for critical pollinators
  • Shelter wildlife
  • Produce nuts and fruits as food
  • Cool our homes
  • Help our mental health

How your congregation can be a part of the solution

The Eden Project is seeking an initial 10 Nazarene churches in the Southeastern Region of the U.S. to be a part of this tree planting movement! In addition to partnering with your church to plant trees, we will offer long-term resources and partnership for the ministry of planting and caring for trees in neighboring communities.

Next steps

1. Gather
Gather those in your church who may be interested and set up a meeting with The Eden Project team by emailing urbanfarm@trevecca.edu. Our team will offer an in-depth outline of the project and assess the level of potential impact in your community based on its Tree Equity Score. If it seems like a good fit, we’ll move forward with scheduling a visit!
2. Prepare
Prepare with your church group by connecting with local youth to join for a paid planting event. Research local tree nurseries and identify nearby tree planting locations in high-priority areas.
3. Plant!
Lastly, the Eden Project Team will join your church group in person for a special tree planting weekend.

We look forward to hearing from you!
