While at Florida A&M, Nykolaus was introduced to Genetics and Developmental Biology. Upon completion of his undergraduate degree, Nykolaus moved to Nashville to begin Meharry Medical College’s Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences. His dissertation work was conducted under the guidance of Douglas Mortlock in Vanderbilt’s Center for Human Genetics. Nyk’s dissertation work focused on using DNA conservation to identify noncoding functional regions of genomes. This work was published in Developmental Dynamics. He then began a postdoctoral fellow in Thomas Aune’s lab at Vanderbilt University studying mechanisms regulating mouse thymocyte development. During his postdoctoral fellowship, Dr Reed taught Life Science at Trevecca as an adjunct. Dr Reed joined Trevecca as faculty in 2013.
