Richard earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Eastern Nazarene University, a Master of Arts in psychology from the University of Missouri, a Master of Arts in pastoral divinity from Nazarene Theological Seminary and a Doctorate in Philosophy in education administration from Oregon State University.  

Richard's ministry in the Church of the Nazarene included serving as senior pastor of Salem First Church and Detroit First Church. He also served as the Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program and Director of the Sandberg Leadership Center at Ashland Theological Seminary, Ashland, Ohio.  In addition, he developed a leadership/management training program which he presented in the corporate world.  

Richard lives with his wife Shirley in Franklin, Tenn. He teaches a Sunday School class at Nashville First Church of the Nazarene and serves and serves as an interim speaker on the Mid-South District Church of the Nazarene.
